1st Women's Showdown a Success, Towson Breaks Record in Win

The 1st DVCHC East Coast Showdown to feature a women's division has concluded -- and it was awesome.

A total of 8 women's teams participated in the tournament, contributing 92 goals through 612 minutes of hockey.

TOWSON UNIVERSITY was the big winner of the weekend, sweeping all three opponents (9-0, 9-0, 9-0).  The flawless performance broke a DVCHC record (men's & women's) as Towson became the 1st Showdown team to ever capture all 18 possible points.

"The Showdown weekend was a great opportunity to show what our team has to offer this season," said Towson captain Beth Kennedy. "We can't wait to continue the rest of the regular season when we get back from the Thanksgiving break."

The women of the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND also went undefeated over the weekend, finishing 2nd after a dominant 3 games (9-1, 8-2, 8-3).  The Terps moved into 1st place in the division with a win over UVA.

Local VILLANOVA finished third with two wins and ROWAN tied them in points after a strong 1-1-1 weekend.  "The team looks forward to continuing our great season after a restful Thanksgiving," says 'Nova's Kelly Olsen.

Beyond the scores (below), the weekend treated players to a rare opportunity to mix & mingle with teams from across all 3 women's divisions.  "We met a lot of girls from all over the Northeast who were really fun to play against," said Maryland's Sara Dibernardo.

Off the ice, teams socialized at recruiting tables with high school players and fans from around the area.

"I'm from Pennsylvania," says Maryland's Adrienne Baer.  "It was awesome to be there and have my biological family see me play hockey with my Terps family."

Each one of the 8 hockey families was tested all weekend, some in different ways than others:

The women of UVA shared the longest car ride of all the teams to get in on time.  At least they had a 4-0 win to talk about on the way home.

The NJ PHOENIX lost Joanna Kulpanowski to a broken arm in a heart-sinking moment on Saturday.  Jenn Mannheim tweeted that she'd be "playing without my best friend and line mate for the rest of the season."

RUTGERS had 6 skaters participate in the tournament.  AMERICAN, only 5.   "We played Rowan and Villanova iron man," says AU's Samantha Erne.  "The Rowan girls were encouraging us at the faceoffs and gave us props at the end of the game.  One of their fans came over to pump us up during the break.  Pretty cool."
