D1 Most Valuable Player

#22 -- Alyssa Agati, RUTGERS

Regardless of her scoring record, our MVP of the year would have to be Alyssa. Alyssa spends most of her practice time teaching newer skaters, giving them individual attention that they normally wouldn't get during a team ice slot. Her passion on the ice is nothing compared to her devotion to the team.

#12 -- Katie Barbor, UMD

Katie Barbor was a key addition to keeping the University of Maryland’s women's hockey team competitive this season.  She came in as a freshman and brought a spark to the team.  Katie was not only our leading scorer but was also a defensive stronghold as well. Katie played every other shift and was still able to boast one of the best plus-minus records on the team. She was our most valuable player.

Katie was top line power play and top line plenty kill.  Every time she touched the ice she genuinely played like it is her last shift and goes all out all the time. On more than one occasion Katie got sick on the bench and still managed to not miss a shift. Even though Katie was only a freshman she was a role model to others on the team and almost never missed anything. The team would turn to Katie when they needed to be pulled up and focused. Katie was able to do that. Unlike most of the girls Katie grew up playing boys hockey. She has a different style to her play. She plays with confidence and a swagger that was uncommon among the many of the girls.

Katie is a well rounded player who was the driving the force behind Maryland's season this year. Katie was Maryland's highest scorer and would hands down be the choice for Maryland's rookie of the year and MVP.

#14 -- Jacqueline Denning, VIL

"Wow."  That's the general reaction that people have after watching Denning play hockey.  We've gotten it from other coaches, other players, and fans. She's flat-out incredible. The best thing about Denning is that you get all of the talent and none of the ego. In fact, she may be the most modest person on the team. After having a four-goal game, we'll ask her how many goals she scored.  She'll answer with a shrug, as if it's no big deal. But it has been a huge deal for our team. Some players lead their teams through words; Denning leads her team through play. She has single-handedly erased three-goal deficits, and her team does not hesitate to rally behind her. Jackie is the definition of a game-changer, and as freshman is the cornerstone of our team.  As if she wasn't impressive enough, Denning is also a member of Villanova's varsity crew team.  Her days start with crew practice at dawn, and finishes with hockey practices at 11PM.  And she's never missed a thing. Correction, the best thing about Denning is that we have her for three more seasons.

#8 -- Kaila Frazier, TOWSON

.

Kaila just transferred to Towson this year and when she heard there was a women’s ice hockey team, she joined right away. Kaila is an asset to the team both on and off the ice. She is not only the team’s highest scorer, but the Vice President for the upcoming 2014-2015 season. Kaila led league with 52 points in the regular season (33 goals and 19 Assists) in only 11 games. She then added 4 goals and 4 assists leading Towson to the DVCHC Division I Title. Kaila is a no ego player, who is just as happy to set up a goal as she is to score one. Kaila fosters team camaraderie both on and off the ice with her positive attitude. She works both offensively and defensively as a dependable playmaker for the Tigers.  Towson’s offense is one of full zone puck control and Kaila’s vision and puck handling skills help Towson maintain control of the puck from large parts of the game.  She average 3 goals a game and had 7 hat-tricks and 2 playmakers (3 assists) during the regular season scoring points in every game.

#8 -- Jennifer Morgan, UVA

Jen served as our captain and scored 16 goals, including a league-leading 6 PPGs.  Her 20 point season was inspriational and impressive with our short bench, her leadership never faltering on or off the ice.

#18 -- Abigail New, NAVY

Abby New is a player that is fun to watch, an honor to play with, and near impossible to play against. With an uncanny ability to hit the back of the net, Abby has scored 30 goals in her 9 game season. Abby's skill isn't confined to the offensive zone. She is quick to back check, help on the defensive zone break out, and win the small battles along the boards. The team can rely on Abby to pick up the pace when the intensity is low, inspiring other players to do the same. Her talent, hockey sense, are an invaluable asset to any team.

#1 -- Leanne Niemi, LIBERTY

Leanne as continued to be our most valuable player for our team. For a 2nd year, she faced almost 500 shots in 8 games. She led the league with a 0.936 save percentage which is outstanding considering the number of shots she faced each game. She also helped our team stay in 2nd place (1 goal behind navy) with only 34 goals against all season. I believe every team would agree they had a very hard time putting the puck past her. She continued to be consistent in her stats and gave it her all every game considering the development stage of the team in front of her.

#41 -- Christy Pastucha, SRU

Christy has been a leader on the SRU team for the past 4 years.  She has played in 2 championships with the Crab Pot Tournament.  Christy was instrumental in leading the team to the 2011 National Championships where SRU placed 4th.  Christy has held positions of Vice President and President of the team in past years and is well deserving of Most Valuable Player for SRU and the DVCHC league.
