D1 Top Scorer

#12 -- Katie Barbor, UMD

Regular Season: 14 GP, 46 PTS  (33 G, 13 A), +11

2015 Playoff: 3 GP,  9 PTS (5 G, 4 A)

.

Katie Barbor is hands down the MVP of the University of Maryland's 2014-2015 Women's Ice Hockey team. Katie was the difference maker on the team without Katie we would not have been the team we were. She not only lead the league in goals but she was also a stronghold for the Terps on defense. Katie played no less than half of every game. She double shifted constantly because she was our top line center, our top line power play and our top line penalty. Katie basically did it all. Katie's love of the game and of her teammates drove her to push herself to succeed daily whether it was in practice or in a game. I will not forget our game against Towson at Wells because Katie had the flu the entire week leading up to it. Katie's teammates voiced their concerns not only because of the possibility that the backbone of the team may not be able to play but also for Katie's health. Katie took one practice off that week and that was it. She refused to let how she felt keep her off the ice. Katie pushed through and played a tremendous game dispute being so under the weather. She herself says the entire game was a blur but she doesn't regret playing. Her desire to play through the illness pushed her teammate to work through any exhaustion they had. Without Katie the game would not have been the same.

Katie also pushed everyone in practice bringing the overall speed and intensity up a notch. We skated the mile two separate times in our first practice back from Christmas break and Katie proved how she had worked so hard over break and it was her the other girls needed to push to keep up with. Katie not only lapped girls but she beat the next fastest girl by over a minute. I was blown away.

Katie's drive, desire and love of the game is a big part of what makes Maryland the team we are. She not only adds to things you can see on paper like the score sheet but adds value to the team through her heart and I turn giving her teammates a role model day in and day out.

#8 -- Kaila Frazier, TOWSON

Regular Season: 44 PTS  (27 G, 17 A), +32

2015 Playoff: 10 PTS (8 G, 2 A)

.

#14 -- Jacqueline Denning, VIL

Regular Season: 11 GP,  34 PTS  (21 G, 13 A), +15

2015 Playoff:  3 GP, 8 PTS (7 G, 1 A),  +0

Named team captain in her sophomore year, Denning continues to be a scoring force in the league. She led Villanova, and the league in goals her freshman year, and has stepped up her game to add some big assists this season. Denning is the definition of versatile.  She is a natural forward who has played the past two seasons as a defenseman (and even goaltender for a game). Denning is also a member of Villanova's varsity crew team.  Her days start with crew practice at dawn, and finishes with hockey practices at 11PM.  And she's never missed a thing. Denning is totally committed to the team, and leads by example.  She is a pleasure to coach, and the consummate team player.

#7 -- Allyson Strachan, NAVY

Regular Season: 10 GP,  23 PTS  (15 G, 8 A), +13

2015 Playoff: 3 GP, 10 PTS (7 G, 3 A), +6

Ally is our most valuable player both on and off the ice; she is an amazing inspiration to her teammates.  In games, she is tireless; she never quits.  She plays offense and defense, and is ready to anything that is asked of her.   While she has the most points on our team this season, she is not a puck hog.  She is always looking to make a great pass and a great play.  She is selfless, and it shows.

However, behind the scenes is where Ally consistently makes contributions to the overall betterment of the team.  For the past two years, Ally has taken time out of her busy schedule to lead powerskating classes for the team outside of regular practice times.  In the warmup time at the beginning of practice, she is always helping teammates improve on individual skills.  She makes herself available to everyone on the team.

Most importantly is her leadership and mentoring off the ice.  She is always there to talk to her teammates, and support them when they are having troubles.  She has also been integral to the success of the team, and has taken on wide array of administrative responsibilities in order to maintain our good standing with the school administration.  Finally, she has accomplished all of this while maintaining a stellar academic and military record.  She is ranked 18 in a class of over 1100 students.  She was also recently selected as the Naval Academy’s nomination for the prestigious Truman Foundation Scholarship.  She is not just our most valuable player, she is our most valuable person.

#18 -- Amy Loughman, RUTGERS

Regular Season: 11 GP,  25 PTS  (13 G, 12 A), -21

#83 -- Kristin Bielewicz, SRU

Regular Season: 8 GP,  21 PTS  (15 G, 6 A), +3

#2 -- Carly Buckholz, UVA

Regular Season: 16 PTS  (13 G, 3 A), +3

2015 Playoff: 2 GP, 4 PTS  (2 G, 2 A), +4

-Carly always reminds the team to be respectful to opposing players and coaches, referees, and our own teammates and coaches.  She also sets a great example for the rest of the team by never getting upset and always being a great sport.

-Carly Buckholz once said that her day was kind of bad. That is the most negative thing that I have ever heard come out of her mouth. Though we had some frustrating games and plenty of excuses for anyone to lose themselves, she kept her composure, kindness, and usually a smile.

-Carly is the team mom :) She puts the team on her back and makes sure that everyone is having fun and getting what they want out of hockey. She never isolates anyone or gets into irrational arguments. On the ice she plays the sport and does not pick on the other team. She makes us look good by playing amazingly and by leaving the roughhousing and rudeness to the other team.

-I think Carly is a great candidate for the Sportsmanship Award. You can tell that she has such great character just in the way that she conducts herself on and off the ice. She is a great ambassador for our team.

#18 -- Alyssa Davis, LIBERTY

Regular Season: 7 PTS  (5 G, 2 A), -4

2014 Playoff: N/A

Alyssa joined our team at the last minute and proved to be a great player for us. She was dominant in each game from an offensive and defensive standpoint. Alyssa is a great definition of an all around hockey player being able to be strong up front and also defensively through back-checking or playing defense when we needed strength there. Alyssa concluded the season and led our team with 2 power player goals, 5 of our 9 scored and assisting on an additional 2 of the 9 goals. She worked hard each game and proved to break up our opponents plays when possible.

#9 -- Elizabeth Hitti, UPENN

Regular Season: 4 GP, 18 PTS  (13 G, 5 A), +9

2015 Playoff: N/A

Hitti is an athlete in every sense of the word. She is strong, aggressive, competitive, and mentally prepared for anything. The fact she led our team in points even after missing a little under half our season speaks for itself. Things happened when Hitti was on the ice, whether it was her putting the puck in the net or setting someone else up and when her skates touched that ice, every opposing player knew who to watch. Beyond her play in games, Hitti was a humble player during our practices. As impressive a player as she was, she never bragged, never showed off, but only did her best. This work ethic pushed the rest of our team, myself included, to work harder and be better. You rarely see a player with with such skill act so modestly and better yet be a positive presence morally on a bench.

#34 -- Taylor Hadley, LOYOLA

Regular Season: 11 GP, 24 PTS  (14 G, 10 A), -2

2015 Playoff: 2 GP, 3 PTS  (2 G, 1 A)

Our young team took its cues from its seniors, and Taylor was the standard they had to live up to from the very first game. Our senior captain was a consistent offensive producer, a tireless worker, and a tremendous leader. As our short bench rendered some legs tired, she always seemed to be the one taking the extra shifts late in games to keep teammates fresh.

She blocked shots, then left opponents in awe when she came back from the injuries they caused. She played our first playoff game with six skaters and no goalie coming off a crippling illness. And she still managed to lead the team in scoring. We didn’t have enough players for someone to focus on only scoring goals, but we were lucky to have someone like Taylor who did it all.

#5 -- Lindsay Gioioso, LOYOLA

Regular Season: 11 GP, 21 PTS  (17 G, 4 A), -3

2015 Playoff: 2 GP, 6 PTS  (2 G, 4 A)

Early in the season, as we were breaking in new goalies who had never even skated before, many players took it easy when it came to shooting. It was only when we had our goalie coach suit up that we learned of the talent we had on the team. Lindsay lit him up.

Our joint-leading scorer with 27 points and a team-leading 19 goals, Lindsay was a talisman for our success. When she scored, we were competitive. She was fearless on the ice, sometimes too much so, and still willing to sacrifice her scoring to step back and play defense in a pinch. By the time her career is done, Lindsay will be one of the top players in the league.
