D2 Outstanding Defensewoman

#2 -- Erin Calderon, ROWAN

Erin Calderon was our captain this year. At the beginning of the season, she suffered a knee injury during our game against Saint Joe's. She was forced to sit out for a few weeks, but started rehabbing as soon as she was allowed and pushed to come back as soon as possible. She was sorely missed on our defense, with our only two losses of the regular season coming while she was out.

Erin has always lead by example, going to the gym almost every day and skating suicides without complaining because she knew that it would improve her game. She kept us together as a team, and has inspired us to always keep fighting to overcome the obstacles in our path.

#26 -- Katarzyna Dziadosz, RUTGERS

Kat, who is in her last year at Rutgers, is normally a forward. However, as it's a building year for our team, she graciously moved to defense in order to back our less experienced players during games. She played a stellar season, quickly learning the ins and outs of defensive playing, and was able to work seamlessly with the offense due to her familiarity with the position. She scored multiple goals herself throughout the season as well.

Kat has been our Vice President for the past two years, and never fails to secure transportation to our many away games for us. She somehow manages to balance her busy job as a student police officer, and her double major (and minor!) along with her commitments to the team. Kat's also the first one to make new players feel welcome, and never fails to congratulate everyone on a job well done after a practice. She's always willing to lend some advice to new players, and her presence will be sorely missed. We wish her the best of luck with becoming a police officer!

#22 -- Sammi Erne, AU

It's hard to believe that Sammi didn't grow up playing defense.  On the ice her talents in our zone are apparent.  She's quick, smothers attacks quickly and works harder than most -- all without getting a single penalty all season.  In the offensive zone her devastating shot helped her to 2nd most points on the team.  We only have 3 defenseman so her hard work becomes even more impressive -- she has to do it all game, in match-ups where we were often stuck in our own zone!  Sometimes without a sub, most often through injury, Sammi has been our rock on the ice.  She's never missed a game or practice and her leadership & positive attitude off the ice has helped save our team this year.

#22 -- Victoria Friday, NAVY

Only starting two years ago, Vickie’s work ethic has made her an integral part of the Navy Women’s Hockey team.  Vickie is never intimidated by her opponent’s size, she is a prime example of “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”  Her skating continues to improve every practice.  Vickie’s determination to fine-tune her puck handling skills only develops her into a better player.  Her kind heart is quick to encourage any player who may be having a hard time and Vickie never passes the opportunity to help those around her.  Next year Vickie will be a senior and the team is confident in her ability to command the ice from Defense and continue leading the team in an upbeat, hard-working fashion.

#7 -- Rache Kirsch, IUP

Raché was our most reliable defensewoman this year, playing a ton of minutes and joining the rush to help ignite the offense.  She was second on the team in scoring while playing defense.  We were regularly short handed on the bench and never had more than 3 defensive players at a time.  A lot was expected and asked of all of our defensive players but Raché truly rose to the occasion.

#14 -- Emma Malenka, COLUMBIA

#1 -- Gwendolyn Peck, UVA
