D1 Sportswoman of the Year

Dani Laverty -- UD

.

Dani Laverty is currently finishing her senior year at the University of Delaware.  Dani has been a heavy influence on the team for years.  Her positivity and general attitude is inspiring to witness.

A perfect example of Dani’s sportsmanship was prevalent in the championship game this season.  She took a rather strong hit along the boards, but she got to her feet immediately and skated away with no retaliation.   In her four years of playing for the Lady Blue Hens, Dani has only served two penalty minutes and has never been known to talk back to players, officials, or coaches.

As a captain for two years, she continued to lead her teammates with respectfully and positively.  Dani has always treated everyone with respect whether it’s opponents, officials and coaches.

Dina Dicampli -- WCU

.

I know that I will probably say the same thing as many coaches when it comes to this award but Dina is the Definition of sportsmanship. Dina was always there for any player on our team or even an opponent if she felt they needed a hand. Dina always had a positive attitude and consistantly led our team through some tough times at the end of the season. She truly is that perfect senior who showed outstanding leadership and class through out the entire season.

Dina also showed a lot of class when dealing with officials. Throughout the season several times she had to have conversations with referees in emotinal situations and handled herself with the upmost class in those sitiuations.

Nancy Norman -- UVA

.

For Sportsmanship Award, UVA nominates Nancy Norman.  Nancy serves as our co-president and assistant captain and anyone who has interacted with her in this league knows she is one of the most friendly, down-to-Earth, and helpful people in this league.

Nancy is an outstanding ambassador to our team, the DVCHC, and the game of hockey.  In addition to her sportsmanship, Nancy has worked hard this year to improve her game and had a break-out season with 9G, 4A (including 1 PPP and 1 GWG), and finished the regular season +5.

Christine Alix -- UPENN

From day 1, Chris always had a smile on her face. This year was her first year as a hockey player, and she spent the entire first practice wobbling around on a pair of rental skates.

Since, she's come along way as a player, and she has never lost the enthusiasm that she had in the beginning. When our goalie was injured with a concussion, she agreed to jump in net to replace her right away.

In the game where Chris herself was injured in net, she was still asking the EMTs to let her back on the ice to play. She has a wonderful spirit and has never complained about late night practices or long car rides. She is definitely a team player, and her sportsmanship is unparalleled.

Emily Yox -- AU

Emily loves the game of hockey and it shows.  Though she just started last year, Emily has poured her heart into every practice and improved by light-years. Despite the hard work, she isn't always given the ice time she deserves YET is still the loudest on the bench, cheering her teammates -- a hugely positive influence.

One game, when no one could play net, Emily volunteered and missed out on a chance to play forward the whole scrimmage -- for her team.

Emily is an outgoing rep, always willing to help.  Her respect for the game, sacrifice for team and determination to improve is amazing -- we're proud to see the hockey player she's become.

Jennifer Dulski -- CAL

Ms. Dulski came to us as a relatively new player to the game of hockey, only having played competitively a handful of times. Jen is a true athlete and because of this, she improved tremendously throughout the year!

Aside from being in the law/legal profession, Jen also plays women's professional football for the Pittsburgh Passion! Her age, maturity, and respect for the game, other competitors, her teammates and the nature of athletics in our lives, is why Jen is our Sportswomanship of the Year Award!

She exudes this with her passion, easy going, yet aggressive nature on the ice (very comparable to Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers), and again her respect for others and the game itself. We highly endorse Jen for such an honor.

Stephanie Johnson -- UMD

Stephanie has the most level head of anyone on the bench. As a fast center, she is usually the first one into the offensive zone, and is usually the target of the other team. Despite this she has never retaliated, and often calms down teammates in similar situations.

Her composure is due to her love of the game and her unwillingness to let the cheap shots hinder her in any way. She also strives to keep her own play clean, and uses her speed as an advantage when back-checking.

Off the ice she gets along with everyone on the team and is willing to help anyone who asks. Stephanie is also one of the few girls to keep things consistently positive on the bench. Even when the score is against us and we can’t catch a break, Stephanie channels her frustration into action and never turns on her teammates.
