D1 Rookie of the Year

Danielle Malysa -- UD

.

As a sophomore rookie, Danielle has made strong contributions to the Lady Blue Hens.  Not only is she the leading scorer for Delaware, she has an excellent work ethic.

Danielle took on the role of the team’s most vital center, especially important after losing 3 top centers last season.  Her hard work and determination sets the tone for her offensive line and the rest of the players on the ice.

Danielle’s skill and knowledge of the game of hockey is vital for our power play and penalty kill units.  She shows great potential as a leader for the rest of her time with Delaware.  Danielle offers guidance to all of her teammates on and off the ice.  Also, she took the initiative to help facilitate a plan for on and off ice training for Delaware’s trip to the ACHA National Tournament.

Alli Paratore -- CAL

Alli Paratore came to us a very skilled forward who could play well at center and or wing. Her versatility added speed and aggressiveness to our already potent depth at forward and Alli contributed significantly both as a forward and on the power play.

Her aggressiveness was well utilized as a forechecker and was easily our best back checking forward before moving her back to defense to add depth to a depleted defensive core the second half of the season due to injuries.

Upon shifting her to defense, Alli really excelled! She was our top defensive shot blocker, was our "go to" north to south skater on defense, and could be matched with any top forward in the league. Without a doubt, these two rookies are our votes for Co-Rookie of the Year!

Ashley Abrams - AU

Ashley is one of the best play makers around -- she can see where she needs to be at exactly the right time to create scoring opportunities. Her acute hockey sense is coupled with a complete unselfishness -- a willingness to pass and not shoot when the play asks for it.  Her tenacity and hard skating make her a true presence on the ice, fearless and deadly.

As one of two centers in our second semester, Ashley bit back injury to play every other shift -- and skated each as hard as she possibly could.  In a season below .500 Ashley finished with a +2, a strong testimate to her defensive abilities and work ethic. She's always noticed by fans and coaches and is a leader and friend on the team.  We're fortunate to have her for one more season.

Brigit Baglien -- UVA

For Rookie of the Year, UVA nominates Brigit Baglien.  From the day she joined our club, she has been a sparkplug we needed to jumpstart our offense.  She is a quiet leader on and off the ice and her love and passion for the sport knows no boundaries.

In practice and in games, her megawatt smile seen through her cage is an indicator of her passion for the sport and her competitiveness.  Brigit finished the regular season with 7G, 3A (including 1 PPP, 1 SHP, and 2 GWGs) and a +9.  Brigit finished the post-season with 2G, 1A (including 1 PPP), and a +1.

Daria Carzo -- WCU

Daria is fairly new to the game and she really became an intracal part to our team. As a Freshman and only playing the game for about 2 seasons Daria stepped in and was able to play on our first line. She really adapted to the speed of the game very quickly and also was one of the smartest players on the ice at all times. She learned her position so fast that it made it easy for her to move into the DVCHC and finish with some good numbers. (7 Goals , 7 Assist)

Daria also showed a great work ethic. She never quit in practice and always pushed herself to outwork others on the team.

Lauren Hutchinson - AU

Lauren's fundmentals in net and solid butterfly stopped the second most shots in the DVCHC.  Her determination put her in net for 617 minutes in league play (also the 2nd most).  Though we didn't win many games this year, Lauren powered through, directing players and stopping pucks -- assuming responsibility.

A .897 save percentage in a year where we had a shortage of natural centers and defensemen is something worth noting in this competitive division.  Beyond numbers, Lauren's natural ability and sharp competitiveness means reliablility and resolve between our pipes.  Lauren has been a fantastic addition and is also a big part of team comraderary off the ice.  2011-2012 will be even better because of her.

Marlee Finestone -- UMD

Marlee was a surprise to the team; usually a quiet girl in the locker room, she showed her true heart on the ice. Her speed was shocking and her intuition of the flow of the game took some of the seniors to school.

With her first year as a Terp she was on the first line and adapted extremely quickly to our systems and style of play. Marlee was consistently hard working and always showed her commitment to the team on and off the ice. She was easy to get along with and constantly strove to improve when she was on the ice.

Megan Cooper -- CAL

Because Megan led the way in all offensive categories for our team, producing at such a young age (freshman) in a competitive league, she was tied with another young lady on our team for Rookie of the Year. For all of the reasons mentioned as her being our high scorer, is why she shares this honor.

Without a doubt, these two rookies are our votes for Co-Rookie of the Year!

Molly Sprayregen -- UPENN

When Molly showed up at the first practice, she insisted that she couldn't play any position but wing--*especially* center. Since then, she has become one of our two rotating centers and has played a few games on defense, and she has done a great job with both.

She is always working hard on the ice, and constantly looking to improve--not to mention the fact that she is always positive, both on and off the ice.
