D3 Sportswoman of the Year

2017 DVCHC D3 SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR: CHRISTINA SMALL!

#9 -- Christina Small -- SJU

This one could have to quite a few players on our team, but as with many other things in life, reward tend to go to those who work hardest, and nobody outworked Chrissy. Even when stricken with illness, she never left top gear. This brand of effort can oftentimes lead to overly aggressive/unnecessarily physical play, but if Chrissy’s game were a political press conference, she never left message. No matter what was thrown her way, she was way more focused on winning pucks and applying pressure, than engaging in chippy play and chirping banter. I think the only time we ever heard her say anything negative on the ice was the time she told coach he skates like a newborn giraffe in broken stilettos. But to be fair, she wasn’t wrong.

#9 -- Rachel Collette -- IUP

Rachel is the nicest hockey player you will ever meet, and certainly one of the nicest, most genuine people you may ever know.  She would regularly apologize during the game even when she was not at fault. She would always be concerned that both her own teammates as well as her opponents were ok, and she always had the best interest of others in mind.  She was also the most joyful and optimistic player in our locker room, in the team van, or where ever we were.  She was always there to boost our spirits, make us laugh, and simply ensure that while we were competing we never lost sight of having fun while doing it.  She also was instrumental in making sure the team could function, helping to make sure that all of the behind the scenes work got done.  Although she didn't have an official title as team management this year, she helped those new to those positions accomplish what was necessary to keep the team running.  She also served as an alternate captain and lead by example.

#40 -- Liz Ditzel -- Rowan

Better known as Pretzel, Liz deserves this award more than any one else because regardless of the ups and downs that occurred on and off the ice, Liz pushed through and never let it affect the team's end goal. She carried the team to another Championship season and lead the league in goalie stats.

#17 -- Meg Tsai -- Rutgers

Meg Tsai is one-of-a-kind. She always has such an uplifting attitude, even when she trips and falls flat on the ice. She can always be counted on to take that extra step to ensure that the team is running smoothly, especially with the changes in the league and in the school policy this year. In addition, she managed to pull our highest number of registered players in the past three years. As president, Meg is the bridge between our team, the rink, the school administration, and the league. She is fair, honest, and firm--she is nothing short than the perfect gentlewoman, both on and off the ice. We joke that she's been a better president than both George Washington and Barack Obama combined, but in all seriousness, the Rutgers women are so lucky to have such a positive influence on their team and look forward to playing another year with her.

#24 -- Erin Quick -- UPenn

Erin has been an incredible teammate to play with.  Despite having started playing ice hockey only recently, she has given her heart and soul to the sport and to her teammates.  She's always there to give a word of encouragement, is constantly positive, and is giving 110% on the ice at all times.  Both the Penn Women's Club team and the Penn Law team are lucky to have such a tough and inspiring teammate.
