D2 Sportswoman of the Year

2017 DVCHC D2 SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR: AMANDA BLACKMAR!

#11 -- Amanda Blackmar -- Loyola

In its truest form, sportsmanship comes down to treating the game properly as much as it does your opponents and teammates. That means playing fiercely, but respectfully, and playing a full 60 minutes regardless of the score. There were no complaints when she changed positions, got stuck on the ice for 10 minutes at a time, or had to cover for a teammate after an ambitious attempt at a rush.

Amanda pushed her teammates to be better, and I dare say forced her opponents to be better, too, because they knew it wasn’t going to be an easy when she was on the ice. Sportsmanship takes a lot of forms, but Amanda shines as someone who shows all of them.

#14 -- Mikayla Woodley -- UVA

We would like to honor Mikayla Woodley with the sportsmanship award for her unwavering positive attitude. Week after week, she is a ray of sunshine in the locker room and out on the ice. This year was only her second season playing hockey, but Mikayla is one of the team’s most dependable wingers; she always puts in a 110% effort with a smile on her face.

#2 -- Michelie “Keelie” Little -- Villanova

Keelie is a first year grad student at Villanova and just picked back up organized hockey after a long break. Growing up in British Columbia, Keelie traded her hockey skates for figure skater, but luckily for us she still often played pond hockey. Her skills she has been mastering on the pond translated well into organized hockey, and she fit it well with the teams strategy and dynamic. There are many reasons that Keelie deserves the Sportsmanship Award. The first is that we expected a lot of her, often forgetting that she hadn’t played organized hockey in close to ten years, but she never complained. Instead she always asked questions, when she was confused and made sure that she was in the right position. She also was one of a couple forwards who would rotate through a line every game. This means that she would sit out the first shift of every game, because the two other wings started, but again she never complained. She did what ever we needed her to do, putting the good of the team above herself. She is the embodiment of sportsmanship.

#31 -- Gabrielle Reed -- SRU

Gabrielle is very encouraging and positive during games. She is always uplifting towards others on and off the ice. She is always respectful to other teams as well.
