D1 Sportswoman of the Year

#27 -- Kellie Burkinshaw, UMD

Kellie Burkinshaw, #27, has moved positions more times during her time on the team than any other current player and never once complained. Her size is not always best suited to being a wing but you wouldn't guess that after watching her go full speed into the corner after a loose puck.

Because of her drive and enthusiasm, she drew more than her fair share of penalties and as a result ended up bruised more times than we would have liked. But despite that Kellie went back out on the next shift just as hard, if not harder, to reach the puck and support her teammates.

She played hard but never crossed the line to retaliate and never played to that level against opponents. Her strong ethics were held up as an example to the freshmen and even the returning players.

#12 -- Colleen Carroll, VU

Colleen, Junior, was our team president and assistant captain. She was also the heart and soul of our team, and in my first year as coach, she made my job very easy.

I don't believe I know anyone else who works as hard towards making this team as good as it could possibly be, she was always there to set up anything and everything having to do with hockey. I couldn't have asked for a better president or leader to have help me with any issue I had.

Colleen is one of the most outgoing people I know, she always put the team ahead of herself and wanted to make sure our club runs as smooth as possible. I am happy to have a player like this on my team because it shows the younger players the value of hard work towards not only hockey, but life itself. I am honored to nominate Colleen for the 2011-2012 Sportsmanship award.

#12 -- CJ Corddry, UD

CJ is the kind of person that brightens everyone’s day just by seeing her. She is always there to offer a kind word.

CJ not only
provides our team with a positive attitude, but shows her passion for the game every time she steps on the ice.

She works hard every game,
practice and opportunity she gets to play. CJ is a huge motivator to our program. Everyone should want a CJ on their team.

#4 -- Nancy Norman, UVA

Anyone who has interacted with Nancy in this league knows she is one of the most friendly, down-to-Earth, and helpful people in this league.

Nancy
is an outstanding ambassador to our team, the DVCHC, and the game of hockey.  In addition to her sportsmanship, Nancy has worked hard to improve her game and had another stand-out season with 5G, 7A and finished the regular season +7.

#19 -- Lena Merlino, CAL U

Lena has been with the Cal U Hockey program since it's inception 4 years ago. A natural athlete having competed in both softball and swimming in high school, Lena's athletic prowess on our team, dedication, and 0 penalty minutes have earned her our vote for Sportsmanship Award of the year!

Lena never misses practices, meetings, or games and though she may not be on the ice as much as her teammates, she is the loudest voice on the bench in cheering on her mates every shift of every play during the game! She is as loyal as they come to a team and Lena deserves this recognition.

Lena's biggest moment came this year when she had a HUGE goal against West Chester which lead to an 8-2 victory that ended up turning our season around for a push for nationals, when our team was originally down and out after the worst start to the season in program history. Lena will be back next year with us again and we look forward to her role with us!

#23 -- Gina Weires, AU

Sportsmanship has many forms & Gina has pretty much hit them all.  We're so proud of her ability to show how great a TEAM can be:

IN A GAME --  Gina is classy & always upbeat, her love of the game shines in every stride.  She's competitve & very talented but that never gets in the way; win or lose Gina is always having fun & wants players from both sides to join her.

TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM -- We lost all but 1 defenesmen so Gina, a center her whole life, stepped up to try D.  She played a whole semester there, working non-stop to block shots AND generate offense.  She never once complained & was eager to learn.

When leaders went abroad, Gina volunteered as President, doing all the thankless work without ever letting it get her down.  She steps up for anything the team needs & does it with a smile.

MAKING TEAM A FAMILY -- Gina is the glue.  She encourages us at practice & looks after players like a "mama bear."  She's ALL inclusive when planning events & wants everyone to feel important, especially newer skaters.  That's rare for a such a veteran.

Her good attitude is simply contagious & she can make anything fun.  She always has a joke she wants you to be in on and even shared with us her family who, with the same signature care, put the team up, fed us, cheered & volunteered all season.
