Sportswoman of the Year

The 2019 Sportswomen of the Year - Eve Phelps (UPENN) & Lauren MacMullen (IUP)

Eve Phelps - UPenn

Eve, a senior, began her hockey career by learning to skate her freshman year. It takes courage to not only enroll in one of the more academically challenging Universities in the world, let alone take up one of the harder sports to learn. She has been one of the most passionate leaders in our program, holding board positions since her second year. Eve went as far to fully redesign the digital footprint of Penn Women’s Hockey (website, social media, outreach, etc.). As team President, she took on additional responsibility within the University by leading the Executive Board of the Sports Clubs Council. Here, Eve advised other sports in their governance, helping to expand their footprint, and to increase their student and alumni participation. Having never taken a penalty, Eve has done everything in her power to help our team win. In Eve’s four seasons, she amassed 2 goals and 11 assists. Her highest point total came this season with 1 goal and 6 assists.

Lauren MacMullen - IUP

Lauren is a senior this year and has only played hockey for three years.  Despite this, we, as coaches, call her a sponge.  Anything we tell her, she just soaks up and tries her hardest to implement what we tell her to the best of her playing ability.  Lauren never complains.  Unfortunately, she did not score any goals, but never once did she get down on herself or complain, she always looked to it as a learning opportunity.  If she was called for a penalty, she would only ever shrug her shoulders and say “oh well.”  If she accidently bumped into someone on the ice, we could hear her on the bench say “omigosh I’m so sorry!”  She also volunteered to play goal this year during a scrimmage.  This is just the type of person and player that she is.
Lauren is also very humble.  The past two seasons, she has also served as our team treasurer and really helped keep that side of the team running smooth.  One thing that is always hard to teach new players is to cover for your defensemen if they pinch or rush the puck.  Lauren was never one of those players.  Despite never quite becoming a great skater, Lauren always covered for defense when they decided to move out of position.  During one of our games at UPenn a few seasons ago, one of our defensemen pinched low in our offensive zone, so Lauren took her spot on the blue line.  Not 1, not 2, but 3 times Lauren kept the puck in our offensive zone, and I think most of the time she was down on the ice on her knees.  She came to the bench and the whole bench was applauding her for such an awesome shift.  She just smiled and said “thanks.”
Hands down, Lauren is a coach’s dream.  She never wants to stop learning, she always asks questions, and never gives the coaches or anyone else a hard time.

Nominees

Madison Acker - Loyola Maryland

As someone who has been in this position himself, there's nothing worse than that feeling when you realize the bench has shortened and your day is done. But Madison responds to that the way that makes everyone around her better, and keeps her spirit up and supports her teammates so they don't have to worry about the person whose shifts they're taking. She is just as vocal during those times as any other, and it makes the tough decisions easier on the bench when there's a player like that involved. She's also a well-liked player among other teams, with former opponents coming to our games to watch her play, and has issued the most apologies for unintentional collisions out of any player in DVCHC history.

Hope McGivney - Montclair

Hope is an inspiration to all, an extremely versatile player who played forward defence, and even goaltender. There were games this season that Hope never came off the ice . Never once did she complain and she always competed with every ounce of energy she had. Hope is the most deserving player that I know of.

Kelli Hambleton - Rowan

After 4 years with RWIH, Kelli has put in the most heart and dedication on and off the ice. As the club treasurer Kelli raised over $20,000 for the program since 2015 and helped us raise all of our funds to attended Nationals this past season.  There will never be another player on this team with the heart and positive attitude like Kelli.

Kelsey Leone - Towson

Kelsey deserves to be nominated for this award because of all her hard work and dedication to this team. She is literally the life behind its' existence. She is a leader both on and off the ice. Her positive attitude is contagious and motivating,  not only to her team mates, but coaches and fans alike. She also deserves recognition for being the team "Taxi".

Marisa Doherty - Villanova

Marisa Doherty is the type of player to play through every play, lead the line, and encourage everyone around her to keep playing through the last whistle. As a sophomore, Marisa is Vice President of the team and leads the team on and off the ice. Marisa only had one penalty this season and it accurately reflects how she plays a clean game. Marisa is not one to stop playing in the middle of the game, instead she is the one making sure we are all motivated to keep playing until the end of the game. Marisa makes sure that everyone is keeping their head in the game and making sure everyone is level headed while playing the game.Marisa is a powerful player on the ice both offensively and defensively. As a wing she wasn’t afraid to step up and cover for a defensemen and is a strong minded player. Her flexibility has become a strong asset to the team and crucial to our style of play.

Renna Thomas - Lafayette

Renna always brings a positive and non-competitive spirit to the team, always reminding us to have fun. She almost always makes nice small talk at the face-off and is always polite. She just loves to have a fun time, win or lose.

Lily Schillinger - SJU

Lily showed up to every game ready to play hard and win, but was always concious of the other teams. Every time there would be a wider spread with the score, Lily would comment on how we should focus on other aspects of the game besides scoring. She is the first girl to help anyone up if they fall down, she would apologize to girls on the ice if she accidentally hit them. Her overall awareness of the players on other teams was astounding.

Trisha Pipchok - Slippery Rock

Throughout her final season playing, Trisha always had positive words of encouragement to her teammates no matter the outcome of any game or practice. Her empowering presence brought confidence to each member of her team!

Mikayla Woodley - UVA

Mikayla is literally a dream to have on a team. She always shows up to all practices and games, always giving it her 100% no matter what the score. Mikayla never complains about anything and is always ready to play hockey. She never has anything bad to say about any games, always telling everyone good job and how great they're playing, keeping positive vibes on the bench and locker room all the time
