Student-Athlete of the Year

The 2019 Student-Athletes of the Year - Katherine McMahon (Villanova) & Hannah Hiscott (UVA)

Katherine McMahon - Villanova

Kate McMahon is a passionate player, on and off the ice. On ice in between shifts, she can always be heard telling her linemates a good job because of a certain move. She makes sure every player feels valued on the team. In between periods, she will ask thoughtful questions, all of which helps the team improve and learn. Her camaraderie and passion does not stop when she takes off skates. Although never to boast to her teammates or coaches, Kate McMahon dedicates her time to Special Olympics and trying to bring inclusion to Villanova and beyond. On a student- committee, Kate has already started planning next year’s Fall Fest. This year, she is the chair of Long Distance Running competition, meaning she will organize and plan the competition for Fall Fest. In addition to Special Olympics, she is a active member of a on campus club, Level, which is dedicated to level the playing field for all students with disabilities. This past fall, she was an Orientation Counselor to 23 new students, helping them to transition into college. She also helps at the on campus Career Center, editing and revising resumes for fellow peers. Kate is also a tour guide for the Blue Key Society at Villanova, which is unpaid. She dedicates her life to helping others and brings her positivity both to the ice and off.

Hannah Hiscott - UVA

As a member of not only UVA hockey but her sorority, Sigma Kappa, the UVA healthy eating initiative, Greens to Grounds, the University of Virginia School of Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers at UVA, and Hoos for Inclusive Sexual Education (HISE) Hannah has such a positive impact on our team and the rest of the UVA community. In addition to all her involvement around UVA, Hannah is also a double major in Environmental Engineering and Physics. Hannah's always gives her 100% to everything she does, including her school work and her community involvement.

Nominees

Hannah McKenzie - Loyola Maryland

In her capacity as a school orientation leader, Hannah is invaluable to not only the school in getting first-year students settled into campus, but to our team in using that venue to make sure students coming to Loyola know there's a hockey team for them to play on. Admissions does us no favors, so Hannah volunteering weeks of her time during the summer for the sake of the school has real value to us. She also has served as a voice of reason on the team as we navigated some rough waters, and has one of the steadiest, happiest personalities on the team.

Aubrie Weyhmiller - Rowan

Aubrie learned how to play hockey while in college. She was nominated as the club's VP her freshman year and has been the President ever since. Aubrie has become a stronger and more supportive teammate and captain every year. Aubrie organizes every team community service project every semester and still maintains a 4.0 GPA while studying Biophysics. Aubrie has taken many trips this year visiting a number of doctorate programs to attend this coming fall while maintaining her studies, family, social and hockey time. It will be hard to replace someone as well rounded and involved as Aubrie.

Kate Standish - Towson

This is Kates' second year on the team and second year playing hockey. There are many reasons Kate should be recognized for this award. In addition to her 4.0 GPA, she is an exemplary human being. She has a positive attitude and nurturing demeanor. She is capable of diffusing any bad situation and uniting those involved. She stepped on ice for the first time last season braving the most grueling position. As she grows more confident, she just keeps getting better!

Erin Quick - UPenn

Erin is very passionate about her education and the community. She is currently a third-year law student. She sets a great example for our team about the importance of studying and proactively completing your school work. She consistently is asking how she can improve, which lead to increased ice time this season on both the power play and penalty kill. While her stats may not reflect it, Erin's play directly contributed to key point earned in the league standings. Outside of her studies and hockey commitments, Erin works with young lacrosse players to grow the sport she grew up playing and volunteers her time to work pro-bono cases, all while mentoring her teammates and members of the community. She was named a Senior Editor for The Regulatory Review, a Penn law publication, and serves as a JB Director for the Penn chapter of If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice. She works not only in the Philadelphia area, but nationwide to assist those in need.

Gabby Belz - IUP

Gabby is a business major and serves as an assistant captain and vice president for the team.  She has great leadership skills and was always looking for ways she could help out and do things for the team on top of what she was already doing.  During her first three semesters in college, Gabby was in the Business Honor’s College at IUP.  Not only did Gabby have her full course load, but she also had the extra work that came with being in the honor’s college.  This included giving presentations, attending events, and extra projects.  With all of this, regular classes, and hockey, Gabby still maintained a 3.25 GPA.  There have been very few times over the two seasons Gabby has played for us that she has missed a practice.  The few times that she did miss practice, it was typically because she had an exam at 8 am the next morning and our practices weren’t usually over until 10:30pm or later.  Sometimes Gabby would worry about missing a practice because she thought the coaches would make her skate suicides.  As coaches, we always tell our players that they are student-athletes, being a student comes first.
This semester, she applied for, and was accepted, into the early admittance MBA program at IUP.  Gabby strives to do great things and always works hard at everything she does.  On the ice, Gabby gives 110% all the time and always wants to improve her game.  This translates into her school work as well, always pushing herself to get A’s and working hard to earn them.

Paige Fenn - Lafayette

In addition to ice hockey, Paige is the student leadership coordinator of MOSAIC, which is the weekly service programs at Lafayette. She also does biology research, is a member of art society and secretary of  Lafayette association of visual artists, and a member of dance company, in addition to being a double major  in biology and art, and working on a senior thesis.

Brooke Bossong - Slippery Rock

Brooke is not only a good student, but an amazing teammate and leader in the hockey community. She directed a blind hockey tournament and volunteered at other tournaments around Pittsburgh. She also holds a leadership role in the business fraternity on campus which encourages volunteering and giving back to the community. She also holds a position in the Sports Management Alliance on campus.
