For the 1st time in eleven seasons, the DVCHC Women's Championship is coming to Delaware;
An epic affair, showcasing 12 universities, 200 female athletes, family-friendly events and do-or-die hockey, the championship has become one of the largest, women's college hockey events in the U.S.
The Fairground seems a natural fit for such growth. No stranger to spotlights, the facility has welcomed world famous acts like Carrie Underwood & Kelly Clarkson and attracted nearly 300,000 visitors to this year's Delaware State Fair. Its Harrington Raceway & Casino, a $6 million slots palace with live horse racing, offers fine dining, buffet, live music, betting, bars (21+) and more, all to around 1.5 million people a year.
Added to the grounds in 2002, Centre Ice Rink has a single, NHL-sized sheet of ice, a heated viewing area, pro shop, arcade and bleacher seating for over 350 fans. The building is sharp, modern and home to the high quality Centre Grille.
General Manager, Jeff Grable was responsible for welcoming the league to his facility, putting forth a generous offer and conveying the enthusiasm of his staff. On September 4th, the league's 15 teams weighed the Centre Ice offer against those from other rinks and voted unanimously to take Jeff up on his invitation to Harrington.
"After three shining years in Hagerstown, our championship is getting a new look in yet another location renown for its hospitality," says President Bryan Benenati. "Centre Rink is generating a lot of excitement amongst our players. It's a great time to be a DVCHC fan."
"It will be [the rink's] first time hosting anything major, but we do a great job here," Grable mentioned in his league offer. The rest of the Fairgrounds may bask in limelight during the summer, but this winter its Centre Ice Rink will be center stage for women's hockey.
The 2013 DVCHC Women's Championship will kick off Saturday (2/16) with "Learn to Play Hockey" at 1:40pm. Playoff hockey begins at 2:30pm and continues until the Wheatley Trophy and the Spikes Cup are raised on the Monday holiday (2/18).
Mark the calendars! We'll see you in Harrington!
