What to Watch for in 2013's Final Hockey Weekend

The last weekend of the semester is upon us, sending 2013 out with a bang and setting the table for an epic, DVCHC cup run in 2014. Here are the games to watch out for:

#1) UPENN (6-0-0) vs ROWAN (6-0-0)

What doesn’t this game have going for it?  The league’s last two, undefeated teams meeting head-to-head for the first time in history, in a fight for 1st.  The proximity factor means fans from both sides can be there for their team’s final game -- expect an electric atmosphere.  UPENN and Rowan were the best in D2 this semester, the hockey should be exciting and it’s any one’s guess which way this one goes.

#2 RUTGERS (5-2-1) vs MARYLAND (5-4-0)

These two started the semester against one another on October 12.  Rutgers won 8-3 and has since pushed upward.  Their little, big bench includes two of the league’s seven 20+ point getters.  Last weekend RU was the 1st to beat Navy, they might leapfrog them with a win here.  The Terps aren’t that 3-8 team any longer.  They’ve won their last 3 with an average of 7.6 goals per game, including an 8-6 win vs #1 Slippery Rock.  Their poor GAA may or may not be an issue against Agati and Loughman (below).  Who wants it more?

#3 PHOENIX (2-3-0) vs ROWAN (6-0-0) and COLUMBIA (0-6-0)

The NJ Phoenix (above) have never faced off against Rowan on the ice, but they did go toe-to-toe in the WAR BETWEEN THE SKATES. Now they’ll fight for Jersey bragging rights where it counts. Should be a great 1st meeting for these two newly minted teams. NJP is proving a serious contender in D2. They held IUP to 2-3, twice, and almost surprised UPENN in a 4-6 loss. Their weekend will also include a game vs Columbia who just had their best performance to date at the IVY LEAGUE CLASSIC.

#4 VILLANOVA (3-3-0) vs TOWSON (3-4-0) and NAVY (6-1-0)

The Wildcats of Villanova were downed by Towson 5-11 and Navy 3-7 in November, but could easily get revenge behind Denning and Brown. If not they’ll help shift the standings. Towson would take over 5th with a victory. With 60 goals in 7 games (2nd most), they’re a threat to do that. Navy was handed their 1st loss last weekend but they’ll have all hands on deck for this chance at #1.

#5 SJU (0-4-1-0) vs IUP (4-1-0-1)

It’s Hawks vs Hawks as SJU comes to Indiana, PA for a 2 game stay. Saint Joe’s got on the board with an exciting tie last weekend, thanks to heroics by Flemister and goalie Julie Stephano. Could be a great start but they’ll have their work cut out against IUP. The Crimson Hawks are averaging over 5 goals a game and are tied for the second lowest GAA in the DVCHC. Two wins here could put them in position to grab 1st or 2nd next semester.
