Playoffs Near as D1 Teams Battle for Space

Freshman Taylor Hallisey and newcommer Laura Loeser, each had a hat-trick behind Jacqueline Denning's 5 point night as the VILLANOVA Wildcats took revenge on the UPENN Quakers, 8-3.

The win was in contrast to their previous match-up on December 7th when the Quakers broke a tie in the waning minutes of the game, following Elizabeth Hitti's 6 point performance to a 8-6 victory.

The two have now pulled together in standings that, only two weeks from the Frozen Fair Championship, still seem up for grabs.  Only 3 teams have earned an official ticket with 5 spaces & 7 seeds open!

That could change tomorrow.

In their final home game of the season, RUTGERS takes on Villanova Saturday night.  The struggling Scarlet Knights need this win to stay in the running for a post-season, a loss would put everyone else in the division, UPENN, Villanova and LOYOLA U, in.

The turning point came last weekend when Loyola earned two big wins over Rutgers, 9-1 and 9-7, the first wins in Loyola women's hockey history!

"The game was a blast," said LU's Taylor Hadley.  "It was back and forth ...we really came together to make the win happen and we couldn't have been more pumped!"

The games were also the 1st hockey experience for RU goalie, Danielle Gonzalez.  "We were blown away by her effort and ability to stop the puck," said Hadley.  "We were also so excited for our goalie Caitlin."

Caitlin Cress started her career in goal back in November.  Now, in February, she and the Greyhounds could be Frozen Fair bound.

Elsewhere in the division, UPENN takes on TOWSON in Abingdon, MD.  No doubt, a challenge for the Quakers who fell 10-1 to the Tigers in November.  Regardless, a lot's changed since the start of the season.

One thing certainly has remained constant: TOWSON.  Undefeated after 9 games with 59 goals and only 8 against, the defending DVCHC champs became the 1st team to secure seeding after the results last weekend - 1st place in D1 North.

Their undefeated counterpart in the South, NAVY, heads to the league's western border this weekend, dropping in on SLIPPERY ROCK for a doubleheader.  One win and the Academy will lock up its division and the South's 1st seed.  Two wins and they'll finish an unblemished division record.  SRU is 2-2 in division play dispite a bare-bonded roster. They only need 1 win in these final home games to secure a place at playoffs.

Further south, VIRGINIA and MARYLAND will close out their divisional games this weekend.  The state powerhouses go head-to-head in Charlottesville on Saturday night.  UVA could punch a ticket to playoffs with a win.  Maryland, dominant all year, could make that #2 spot official.

After this Superbowl weekend, the Frozen Fair bracket could look a lot less deflated...  (too soon?)
