D1 New Player of the Year

#9 -- Elizabeth Cameron, NAVY

Liz is an athlete, and that showed from the very first day she stepped on the ice.  She had never skated before, but her athletic ability and work ethic have quickly made her a go-to person on the team.  Because she has played a variety of sports, she has been able to quickly assimilate to playing ice hockey.  Her experience playing lacrosse has given her great hands, and natural puckhandling ability.  She even saw game time in ACHA Division I games in the second half of the season—no small feat for someone who started skating in September of last year.  We expect great things from her in the coming seasons!

#30 -- Camilla Davila, UPENN

Camilla was new to the sport this year and decided she would try to play goalie. In my opinion, that takes guts. You have to stand there, face hard rubber pucks, and not ever shy away from them. This is a hard concept for many veteran hockey players, so just imagine how hard this must have been Camilla. Nonetheless, Camilla played fearlessly and shamelessly in practice and our games. The pucks could have just kept going in, but it did not phase this girl one bit. She hung in there and worked hard to get better at her new position. Now she stops pucks well and has even more confidence on the ice. She is what you hope new players to our sport become. She is confident, proud, and hard working, and does not let anyone take that away from her. Next year Camilla will have the pleasure of being our goaltender, and I do not know anyone more prepared to step up to that challenge.

#55 -- Mary Dugan, UVA

-Mary came to our team without knowing anything about the game. I admire her tenacity and persistence to stick with the sport through games and practices. Not only did she buy all new equipment to be with our team, but she stuck around through many games where she may have not seen ice time. That being said, her progress was unsurmountable!

-Mary always shows up to practice with a great attitude.  Even though she didn't get very much playing time, she always had a smile on her face and rooted for her teammates. She worked extremely hard and made incredible improvements over such a short period of time.

-Mary Dugan is amazing. She has the best attitude, patience, and determination. Her stickhandling and passing is coming along nicely, and her willingness to learn skating skills outside of practice suggests that she will advance into a stellar player in the years to come.

-Mary definitely deserves this award because she is a trooper for coming out and trying a new sport. Especially one like ice hockey. She comes to all practices and games, yet she rarely gets any ice time. She does not complain about that but keeps trying hard during practice to get better. She is a very committed player and loves the sport even though she is so new at it.

Mary is definitely my New Player of the Year! She came to the team with such a great attitude and even though we don't practice very much, I have seen her improve a lot over the season. I'm so glad she decided that she wanted to play ice hockey in college with us!

-Mary has unbreakable spirit. She may not have had much game time, but every time she stepped on the ice, whether for practice or a game, she gave it her very all.

Though Mary did not play very much this year, her tenacity was very commendable. She stuck with the sport and has worked on her own to get better. She is always positive and eager to learn and her improvement has been very evident.

-I have never seen someone jump into a sport like Mary did this past year. She had never even been on skates before this year, but that didn't stop her from pushing herself through every drill at every practice this season. She also became extremely well-versed on the league standings, and was a good source of information throughout the year.

#6 -- Charlotte Staver, UMD

Charlotte Staver is the University of Maryland’s Women’s Ice Hockey new player of the year. Charlotte transferred to UMD for her senior year to play track and she had always had a passion for the sport of ice hockey. Charlotte felt the club team offered the perfect opportunity to pick up a sport she had always been interested in. She picked up the sport faster than any one I have ever seen pick it up. Charlotte is a natural athlete but also had a drive and desire to work harder than anyone. When we would finish practice early she would be the first one to approach the coaches to ask more about how to improve her skating and stick work. Charlotte’s enthusiasm paid off and earned her a spot playing with our second line. Charlotte was also the one in front of the net despite being not as strong on her feet as the other girls. She notched a few goals and assists this season and she will be sorely missed.  We wish Charlotte had began playing with us her freshman year because she would have been threat in the league with how quickly she has progressed.

#20 -- Brittany Varacallo, TOWSON

Britt never played Ice Hockey before coming to Towson.  She was a Field Hockey Goalie prior to starting to play on the ice.  She learned to play at every practice and every game.  She accepted every comment and asked questions and certainly watched and listened to all instruction.  She always came to practices and games willing to do and to listen.  She ended the season with 7 goals and 10 assists including a hat trick versus Villanova.  Clearly a dedicated athlete, willing to learn a new sport in her last year of school.  Her attitude and willingness to learn and adapt contributed to her success.
