D2 Rookie of the Year

2017 DVCHC D2 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: KARLY CAMPBELL!

#33 -- Karly Campbell -- Towson

Karly is a Freshman who played high school Ice Hockey for Archbishop Spalding High School.  Karly was one of our many freshman this year, but was very excited and was willing to learn and embrace the Towson Women’s Ice Hockey culture and strategy.  Karly worked hard and improved throughout the year.  She is always being positive and excited to play and didn’t retire when she score her first collegiate goal against the University of Virginia.  But her ultimate sacrifice and determination shined through when she stepped up and volunteered to be goalie.  She had never played before and she faced 20 shots and stopped 15 in a victory against Loyola University.  She made some great saves during the game.  Her always positive attitude and willingness to step up FOR THE TEAM is what has made Karly our Rookie of the Year.

#12 -- Abby Heher -- UVA

Abby is most deserving of the award "Rookie of the Year" for a handful of reasons. This past year, Abby has showed her dedication to the team on and off the ice by doing her best to attend all games and practices, helping new players learn the game, and getting to know her teammates outside of time spent at the rink. She always has an upbeat attitude, continually sets a good example, and is a natural leader.

#4 -- Jamie Burke -- Villanova

When Jamie came to the team as a freshman this year, we were in desperate need of defensemen. She gladly accepted the task and quickly became one of our best defensemen. She has a +34 on the ice and is a +40 in personality in the locker room. Whether it’s teaching us a cool new way to wear our warm ups, or making fun of all of the “old” girls for knowing who Aaron Carter is, Jamie’s personality brings a lightheartedness to the team.

During the fall semester she balanced hockey and NCAA rowing, and still managed to come to every single DVCHC game, she is only one of three girls who competed in all 10 games. But her commitment goes beyond just showing up to games, she is the only freshman who got “van certified” from the school in order to help drive the team to practices and games. She also didn’t hesitate to come with the president and another freshman to wait with her D- partner when she got injured on Senior Night. Jamie is one of the most caring people I have met, and it is a privilege to have her on this team.

#24 -- Hannah McKenzie – Loyola

Our lone rookie this year, Hannah fit in seamlessly both on and off the ice with her relentless play and energetic personality to match. On a team as small as ours, any player as willing and tenacious as Hannah will find a quick home, and she embraced the way Loyola plays hockey in every facet imaginable.

She soaked in coaching and instruction all year and doubled as our most improved player all year. Hannah was third on our team with five points (two goals, three assists) at the Frozen Fair. On a team full of close friends and intense competitors, Hannah was the perfect addition to our growing team.

#9 -- Julia Null -- SRU

Julia began to play hockey this season and loved the game like she had played it her whole life. She worked so hard each and every practice and game to improve as much as she could.
