D2 Rookie of the Year

Kathleen Marinzulich, SJU

Kathleen Marinzulich is a freshman at Saint Joseph’s and a new member to the hockey team.  Kathleen has played organized ice hockey throughout her life and was a huge asset to the team this season.  Kathleen skates with such finesse and has great skill.  She led the team in points this season and worked hard every shift.  Kathleen is the definition of a selfless player.  She wanted to help the other players on the team develop their skill and would provide helpful tips during practices and games.  Kathleen was a strong presence for the team on the ice.  With her powerful skating and her skill, she was always determined to set up her teammates in the offensive zone.  She strived to create opportunities for the team to score, but was always right there to back the defense up as well.  Kathleen knows what it is like to be a part of a hockey team.  She puts the team first and supports her teammate’s efforts.  She is a respectable and reliable player and an overall exciting player to watch.  She loves the game and loves the team.

Kathleen is not only a great player on the ice, but off the ice as well. She is always willing to lend a hand.  In just her freshman year Kathleen has had a major impact on the team and will only grow from here.  She deserves to be recognized for her hard work and for being a leader on the team.

#18 -- Kieran Koch-Laskowski, UPENN

Little tiny freshman, Kieran walked through the locker room doors very quiet, with her hood just peaking above her eyes, put her hockey bag down and began to get dressed. Knowing that Kieran was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia (Abington, PA) we put her to the test to see how tough she was. Just like all freshmen, they need to earn their ice time. Well Kieran certainly did. Showing up to every single practice, opening up out of her shell and becoming more verbal, and she also brought some of that gritty Philly swag skill with her to the rink. Kieran earned her spot on our most productive line this season. Being paired with Eng and Li, these three were our powering second line, and sometimes our most feared line. Kieran was never afraid to stand in front of the net and muscle around the big girls from the other schools. It is not easy to standout in a league with such talent as a freshman, but Kieran made her mark on the team and the league. Ending the season almost averaging two points a game! I mean, do other freshmen post these types of numbers or have the same impact as Kieran?! Kieran Koch-Laskowski is very deserving as the Rookie of The Year.

#13 -- Megan Merchant, IUP

Megan is the player every coach wants to have on the team. In a practice or game, if there is a problem or something that needs to get done it is usually Megan that steps up and fixes it.  For example, in our first game this season we were short a few defensive players.   Megan was asked to move from her position on the first line to defense. She stepped up and gave the team a solid defensive performance. When I asked her to remain on defense, she continued to give us that solid performance all season long. On the ice Megan is constantly on the move, playing each shift at one hundred percent. I am continually amazed at her ability to play at such a high level throughout the game. She has excellent skating and stick handling skills and can always do a double shift if the need presented itself.  Megan has great vision on the ice and always makes good decisions.
